That Friday Feeling.

Alcohol with your name already plastered all over it – how cool is that? The photo of the inspiring lager was sent to me by lovely fellow-Romaniac Vanessa Savage who was ACTUALLY DRINKING IT at the time. Sad to be missing the RNA party this year but hope there will be lots of drinking fun (and the eating of strange nibbly things) for the Romaniacs plus all the other RNA guests at the winter bash in London next week. Anyway, just gearing up for some serious editing, in between school work, visiting poorly friend and aged in-laws...

Back On Track

There comes a time in every writer’s life – well, lots of times, actually – when your confidence is at rock bottom and the idea of ever getting another book sold is a distant dream. And that’s the moment when you crave chocolate very badly but you also desperately want someone to like what you’ve written. My story, Naked in the Rain, was intended to be a novella but decided it had had enough. Good job really, or it would never have fitted the word count. Going to Exeter with the other Exeter Story...

Please Release Me – Splash!

Please Release Me – Splash!

Today I’m helping to celebrate, with a big SPLASH, Rhoda Baxter’s fabulous new book Please Release Me. This post is all about being stuck on the WIP, in a big way. Now, at the school where I work, I’m in charge of rattling out the poems. This isn’t a compliment – it’s just that when anyone leaves, someone has to be in charge of writing a truly awful bit of doggerel for the assembly with the flowers. gifts, tears ets. So in honour of Rhoda, here’s today’s bit of awfulness: Stuck The...

New Chapter

I spent the weekend in the entertaining company of Mandy James at the York Festival of Writing – road trip, escaped deer on motorway, lots of wine, agent one-to-ones, great food, indigestion, fan-girling, discovering great new authors (Jo Cannon, Nicci Gerrard), etc etc. Totally wiped out now, and confused by conflicting advice. Writing the last book – see below – seemed easy compared to putting a toe in the water of psychological thrillers. Watch this space for the (loosely categorised) poem about being stuck which will be...

Moonflower’s Exotic Setting by Leigh Archer (@leigharcherbook) #romance

I chose Moonflower’s setting for purely selfish reasons. It is the area of the Western Cape, almost at the southern-most tip of Africa, where I grew up. It is also one of the most beautiful places on earth in my totally unbiased opinion! Labour’s End, the private game farm on which Sophie takes up a position as head conservationist, is set in one of the few remaining areas of renosterveld – one of the major plant communities and vegetation types in the Cape Floral Kingdom. The word, Renosterveld, translated from Afrikaans, means...

British Weather by JoAnne Kenrick (@joannekenrick) #romance #contemporary

It’s no joke. The weather in Britain is temperamental and bipolar. Sunny one minute, raining the next. And that’s just the summer. The Winter pretty much guarantees to be raining or blowing a gale force wind at least 70% of the time. Perhaps that’s why libraries do great business there. And isn’t it a romantic notion, to be curled up indoors reading with a mug of something warm and comforting while rain pitter-patters on the windows? My newest release, BEFORE THE RAIN, set in North Wales would make great rainy-day reading material, if...

Conservationists and Lovers by Leigh Archer (@leigharcherbook)

If you were asked to come up with the names of famous conservation couples what would they be? My first thought is George and Joy Adamson – famous for their pioneering conservation work and Joy’s bestselling book and the film that came after, Born Free. And straight away that song begins to play in my head: Born free, as free as the wind blows, as free as the grass grows, born free to follow your heart. Which should bring a lump to your throat if you’re anything like me. Joy met George, a game warden in Kenya’s northern frontier,...
